Gas suppression systems are used to protect rooms and areas containing high value or system critical equipment. There are multiple types of gas suppression and flooding systems, and multiple types of gas that can be used. The choice of which depends on the scenario in which it is to be installed.

How do gas suppression systems work?

Suppression systems work by flooding the local area with a gas that either reduces the oxygen content in the atmosphere down to levels that can no longer support a fire or absorbs the heat from the fire interrupting the chain reaction required to support a fire.

The system usually comprises of an electronic detection system covering the protected area. On detection of a fire, the system triggers the release of gas stored from one or more cylinders, into the room to flood the area and smother a fire.

Where high value/critical equipment is located in a none enclosed open area then a system can be designed for ‘local application’ which ensures a constants flow of gas over the protected equipment.

Do I need one?

Gas suppressions systems are commonly used in the following areas:

  • IT Server rooms
  • Electrical substation
  • Printing pressing machines
  • Switch houses

Your insurance company and fire risk assessment will determine whether or not you require a gas suppression system on site.

Should they be maintained?

If you have a gas suppression system on your premises, then you should have it maintained periodically to ensure it functions as designed. Typically a system should be serviced every 6 months, but a shorter service interval may be applied depending on the potential impact of the loss of equipment through fire.

Peterlee Fire Company have designed, supplied and installed gaseous suppression systems from basic single cylinder systems up to multiroom split systems.

If you require a gas suppression system designing or you have a system that you need serviced then contact us.

Need further protection? We offer other electrical fire protection services such as fire alarms, emergency lighting systems, integrity testing, cooker hood systems and aspirating smoke detection systems.
