A Fire alarm is a system consisting of a number of detectors and sounders situated around the premises linked together with a central control panel. The configuration of the system is dependant on the building and the hazards it is protecting.
There are various detection devices that can be integrated into the system but the most commonly used are smoke and heat detectors, as well as manually activated call points.
The control panels come in various designs from conventional systems which can report what zone/area the fire alarm has been generated, to fully addressable systems that can report on the exact device on the system that has triggered the alarm.
The control panel monitors all the detectors on the system for a fire signal to be returned. On receiving a fire signal, the control panel will trigger the sounders across the site to sound the fire alarm, notifying the people on site to evacuate the building. The panel also provides valuable information to fire wardens and the fire brigade as to the location and potentially the nature of the fire.
Your insurers or a fire risk assessment would specify your requirements for automatic fire detection. If you don’t have a fire risk assessment for your premises, then we would recommend you carry one out. If you think you need a fire alarm to give us a call and we can do a site survey and quote for the installation.
It is essential that the system is subject to periodic inspection and servicing so that unrevealed faults are identified, preventive measures can be taken to ensure the continued reliability of the system, false alarm problems are identified and addressed, and that the user is made aware of any changes to the building that affect the protection afforded by the system.
If you have a fire alarm installed on your premises, then it should be maintained to BS5839‐1: 2017.
This involves a minimum of 2 service visits per year. Across the year every component of the system shall be tested. If you have a fire alarm and you would like a quotation for us to set up a comprehensive service schedule.
Your fire alarm system needs to be fully effective 24 hours a day 365 days a year…for peace of mind, we offer our customers a 24/7 emergency call-out service.
