A cooker hood system is a specialist automatic fire suppression system specifically designed to protect high hazard cooking areas, typically used in large industrial cooking areas, or where there are deep fat fryers present.
Most are mechanically operated using drop weights suspended by wires which cross the protected area and have ‘fuseable links’ connecting it all together. When the heat becomes sufficient the fuseable link melts, breaking the wire and the drop weights fall and activate the system. The media used to extinguish the fire can vary from powder to class F AFFF. They can also be operated manually with a push button or call point setup.
Your insurers or a fire risk assessment would specify your requirements for automatic fire suppression systems. If you don’t have a fire risk assessment for your premises, then we would recommend you carry one out. If you think you may need a cooker hood suppression system give us a call and we can do a free site survey to determine your requirements.
Yes. If you have a suppression system then it must be serviced periodically. Usually the service interval is 6 months, but depending on the situation this can reduce to a quarterly service visit. All suppression systems require periodic inspection and servicing to ensure they will function as designed in the event of a fire.
