Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) are self-contained devices worn by people in the event that the environment someone is operating in is not viable for breathing and is hazardous to health.

What types are there?

There are various types of sets, below some of the most common:

  • 10 minute escape sets designed for rapid evacuation of an area
  • 45/60 minute working sets design to people to work for a given length of time in a hazardous environment eg search and rescue services.
  • Trolley units/trailers. There are static air vessels with belt sets connected via long airlines designed to support workers for extended periods in hazardous environments, eg vessel entry and repair.

How is it used?

SCBA is used in various situations, from everyday working processes where the set are a mandatory requirement, to emergency escape sets placed at strategic points to don in an event such as a toxic gas release or a fire.

Do I need Fire SCBA?

In order to ascertain if you require SCBA on your premises you will need to conduct a health and safety risk assessment. This will highlight any potential hazards that pose risk to life from the breathing environment, and the SCBA should be specified appropriately.

Do they require maintenance?

It essential that breathing apparatus inspections and servicing are carried out. This involves a monthly inspection, then depending on the type of equipment the manufacturers recommendations takes over. Usually this is an annual service, then a 6 yearly service.

Breathing apparatus forms part of your overall health and safety strategy. We are a Scott/3M Safety service provider and can provide advice, supply, install and service your breathing apparatus – contact us if you need any further information.
