Vacancies

Essentially a fire hydrant is a connecting point to a water supply (usually underground) that is used by fire fighters to access water for fighting fires.

How to spot them?

Normal hydrants are underground and are identified by a nearby sign (black ‘H’ on a yellow background).
On industrial sites quite often the hydrant outlets are above ground to allow rapid access to the water main.

How do they work?

The hydrant is connected to an underground water main, this can be the towns main, or in the case of industrial sites quite often this is a water supply fed from a separate water source (usually large above ground storage tanks). Private water supplies can often by pressured up higher than a towns main to increase each hydrants capability. The brigade will connect their pump to the hydrant via lay flat hose and use the water supplied by the hydrant to extinguish the fire.

Do I need them?

Yes, the fire brigade will use them in the event of a major fire on your premises. If your business represents a significant risk in the event of a fire your insurance company may request that you install them.

Do they need maintaining?

On the whole, the public hydrant network will be maintained by the local councils, however if you have a hydrant on private land then you may need to service them yourself.
